Having Microdermabrasion on The Body?

Most people I’ve talked to had skin rejuvenation procedures on their face but I had many questions related to having skin resurfacing on the body. Basically, you can have microdermabrasion almost anywhere on your body in order to get rid of superficial scars, age spots, stretch marks, wrinkles, blemishes or dull skin. And by almost, I mean there are exceptions.

microdermabrasion kits reviewed and compared by myself and my friends (I really like home microderm systems because they are convenient to use and don’t break the bank) or find out more about doctor-performed microdermabrasion.

Professional Microderm on The Body
You can have professional micro dermabrasion on the neck, chest, abdomen, arms, hands, buttocks, hips and legs. You cannot have it on the feet, though, because the skin is very thin. Any peeling caused by the high-pressure crystal flow can harm the tissue on these areas, causing injuries, irritations and even permanent scarring.

You cannot have professional microdermabrasion on the ears (including ear lobes) either because the surface of the skin is very irregular and difficult to abrade properly. At the same time, there’s the risk of getting stray micro crystals in the medium and inner ear.

With facial microdermabrasion, there is only one area where it poses a real risk — the eye lids. Not only is the skin on the eye lids very sensitive and thin, but there’s the added risk of getting stray crystals in your eyes. Other than that, office micro dermabrasion can be safely done on the nose (including nasal folds), chin, forehead, cheeks and lips.

Home Microderm on The Body
Some people seem to believe that as long as they use something less abrasive, it’s ok to have microderm abrasion on the eye lids. I do not recommend it, not even with a face micro dermabrasion cream. Not only can you get stray crystals into your eyes but the abrasive cream itself can actually injure the eye lid (the skin is so thin that it could easily be torn, even by a less effective product). The risk is simply not worth it.

The skin on the ears may be a bit thicker (and, in theory, microdermabrasion creams should be mild enough to work without risks) but the ear folds and hard-to-reach places make the area difficult to abrade and clean properly. I would avoid having microdermabrasion on my ears unless there’s a specific, serious skin imperfection I’d want to get rid of. Other than that, facial home microderm abrasion products are generally safe to use on the nose, chin, lips, forehead, cheeks and neck.

Be very careful around the lips where the skin is very sensitive and thin. This area needs a shorter and more gentle massage than the rest of the face. Also make sure to avoid getting microderm abrasion cream in your mouth (even though aluminum crystals are not considered toxic, they can, in theory, cause internal injuries if swallowed).

Facial vs Body microdermabrasion Creams
Body microabrasion scrubs are usually more aggressive than the facial creams, because they are especially designed for the thicker, less sensitive skin on the body. Using the body formula on the face can result in irritations, breakouts and injuries. Using the facial formula on the body, on the other hand, is a waste because face micro dermabrasion creams are much too mild to have any significant effect on thicker skin.
